Understanding the need of Backups
In every organization, data is stored on storage media, such as, hard disk. Everyday data is generated and used by the employees. The storage media are open to various attacks, such as, virus. In some cases, the system stops functioning, resulting in the loss of data. Hence, there is a need to store this data in alternate storage media. This process of storing data in alternate locations or storage media is referred to as Data Backup. Backup utility enables to protect data from accidental loss.
For instance, as a system administrator you backup important data files of the sales department to an external storage media, such as a tape drive. In the event of system failure, virus attacks or malicious users deleting the files, you can restore the data files from the external storage media and prevent loss of data.
